Conference time for legally aided clients.

This area is for clients whose matter is funded under a Legal Aid grant (NSW or ACT). The conference is at no cost to you under the terms of your grant. Request a time by video link (AVL) or phone, tell us when you are free, and we will email back from the office to confirm.

Before you send your request, a few things to know

  • Your grant covers this conference. There is nothing to pay.
  • Bring your CAN and any new paperwork. Court Attendance Notices, bail variations, any letter from a witness or the prosecution. Email it to aaron@aklawyer.com.au before the conference.
  • Tell us if your circumstances have changed. A new address, a new job, a new bail breach, a fresh charge. Anything that affects the grant or the matter.
  • Conferences run on time. Legal Aid funds a defined number of attendances. If you are late, the time is shortened, not extended.
  • Mode of conference. Video link (AVL) and phone are the default for legally aided matters. In-person is reserved for hearings and pre-trial conferences where it matters.

Helpful tips

How to make the conference useful.

  1. 01

    Two or three questions, written down

    Your grant covers a set number of attendances. Coming in with a written list keeps the time on point and means the most important things get answered.

  2. 02

    Send any new documents 24 hours ahead

    If we have them before the conference, we can read them in advance and use the conference for advice rather than reading.

  3. 03

    Be honest about what is happening

    Bail breaches, new charges, recent police contact, problems with a co-accused, family pressure. We cannot help with what we do not know.

  4. 04

    If you want to know about your grant

    The office can tell you what attendances and stages are covered. Email aaron@aklawyer.com.au and we will give you a plain-English summary.

  5. 05

    Let us know early if you cannot make it

    The Legal Aid grant is finite. A no-show counts against your grant. Tell us as early as you can and we will reschedule.

Eligibility questions

Not sure if you are still on Legal Aid?

If your matter was set up as a Legal Aid file, you are on Legal Aid until the grant ends or the matter closes. If you are not sure, email the office at aaron@aklawyer.com.au with your name and matter type and we will confirm in writing.
